Ithaca
and Tompkins County offer numerous natural wonders to enjoy all
year round. After a full breakfast at your B & B or a "world famous omelette" at Kelly's Dockside on
Taughannock Blvd (Route 89), begin your day with a recreational
skate at Cass Park or a brisk walk along the Cayuga
Lake Waterfront Trail . Cross-country skiers can get close
to the lake and take in some great views on the north end of Treman
Marina.
Continue up Route 89 to hike to the frozen falls at Taughannock
Falls State Park or enjoy the falls from the look-out. Rice
Hill, on the way to Taughannock Falls look-out, is
a popular spot for sledding and offers an outdoor ice-skating
pond.
Heading
back toward Ithaca, avid nature seekers will enjoy trails for
hiking, X-country skiing, or rent snow-shoes at Cayuga Nature Center . You can also visit
their live animals indoors and outdoors. Just south of CNC, The
Glenwood Pines is a favorite lunch or dinner spot during
an active day--enjoy the wood stove in the winter, home-made soups,
famous burgers, and lake views.
Cornell Lab of Ornithology , all four state
parks, and the Finger Lakes National Forest between
Ithaca and Watkins Glen also welcome hikers, x-country skiers,
and snow shoers. The Rink, located on the east
side of Cayuga Lake, going north on East Shore Drive, offers
figure skating and an indoor mini-golf course. Downhill skiing
is available at nearby Greek Peak (only 25
minutes to the east). |
